Shree Chhatrapati Shahu SSK, an Indian sugar plant in the state of Maharashtra, celebrated its January 2006 plant expansion. The expansion was made possible with the new Smar Foundation FieldbusTM protocol equipment, the latest generation technology that is entirely new to the country. This project involved the supply of Smar LD302 pressure transmitters, FY302 valve positioners and TT302 temperature transmitters to SSK. It included System302 with Syscon and ProcessView configuration software, and an HMI to make it easy for the operator to visualize the process on computer screens.
The automation process was a huge success for India, which has more than 600 sugar plants throughout the country. The sales and implementation for this plant expansion was coordinated through Pune Indpro, the Smar representative for the Indian market. The first phase of the Smar supply to Shahu occurred in 2004 with the introduction of four automated cooking tanks and equipment to facilitate the sugar making process. “Smar System302 increased productivity, cut production costs and eliminated errors experienced from the previous manual operation, while securing product quality”, says Max Ludewig, Smar Business Manager responsible for team management.
The inauguration of the new automation device phase was attended by hundreds of visitors and included Kagal city authorities, engineers and plant employees and their families. In India, new acquisitions and related events are celebrated with spiritual rituals, and during these ceremonies, the plant was decorated with religious symbols in appreciation for the knowledge and technology recently acquired.
